Apex Action Sponsors Emma Rosen “The Work Happiness Expert”, To Give Students Careers Advice

On 16th July over 200 Year 10 students at Chase Terrace Technology College (CTTC) took part in a Career Workshop morning.  Apex Action was pleased to sponsor Emma Rosen to talk to the students about how to get more out of work experience, how to learn by doing & how to be more proactive about their career education.

Emma, “The Work Happiness Expert”, is a now professional speaker, careers education & portfolio career advocate.  But it has not always been that way.  Recounting her own career pathway, she shared her “25before25 – The Radical Sabbatical” story with the students.

Never really knowing what she wanted to do Emma spent a year in a 9 to 5 office job.  She resigned & took an entire year to focus on finding her ideal career.

Emma tried 25 different dream jobs before turning 25 through work experience, shadowing & just giving things a go.  Her placements ranged from archaeology in Transylvania, tour guiding in Venezuela & investigative journalism with The Telegraph, to an extra in a major movie, alpaca farming in Cornwall & assisting the British Council’s crisis team during the terror attack on Parliament in March.

The CTTC careers event was organised by Julie Poppleton, Director of Careers at the Stephen Sutton Multi-Academy Trust. Emma’s presentation was one of 27 different sessions.  Other workshops included National Apprenticeships, Politics, Stafford College Football Academy, Speech & Language Therapy, Cabin Crew, Travel & Tourism, as well as Demolition in Construction & Bomb Disposal!  During the careers week every student had also undertaken a mock interview.  Forty different employers conducted the interviews.  They provided verbal feedback, as well as written feedback at the end of the interview for students to take home.  To fully embrace the experience students had been allowed to discard their school uniform for the day & wore smart business dress deemed suitable for an interview instead.

Julie Poppleton, Director of Careers at CTTC commented;

“Emma’s presentations surpassed my expectations!  She engaged even our hardest to engage students and had a captive audience from the very start and all the way through the hour-long talk.

Student feedback has been really positive.  They felt she was very relatable and they enjoyed hearing about her own journey and how she overcame her setbacks.  The advice she gave to students I am confident will have a long-term impact.”

Emma Rosen commented;

“It has been wonderful to work with Apex Connected once again to speak at Chase Terrance Technology College; they have enabled me to teach young people about the sheer importance of getting multiple work experience placements in a diverse range of industries.  I believe this is a vital message that can hugely impact students post-16 and post-18 choices.”
