School “Big Battery Hunt” Competition Winners Receive Educational Resources from Apex Action

Pupils who collected the most batteries as part of the “Big Battery Hunt” at St Luke’s Catholic Primary School, Frodsham, have won a variety of educational resources with compliments of Apex.

The resources, which will help the pupils to develop their maths & English skills, include Fraction Stax, Number Skittles, First Play Number & Symbol Cones, Wooden 4-in-a-Row, Hip Hopping Hundred Mat & Sight Word Swat.

The project was part of Duracell’s national Big Battery Hunt, an initiative that aims to make a positive long-term difference to our planet.  Pupils learned about the importance of recycling, as well as combining several curriculum-linked maths tasks.

During February & March the enthusiastic pupils collected 4,252 batteries in total!

The Top 3 classes were:

First Prize – Year 2 with 2,232 batteries
Second Prize – Year 5 with 860 batteries
Third Prize – Year 4 with 437 batteries

The pupils also made some fantastic recycled Easter bonnets.

Chris Hutchings, Managing Director & Debbie Snelson, Commercial Manager of Apex were delighted to visit St Luke’s to announce the winners & present “Apex Action Award Eco Champions” certificates.

They also took along the Apex Land Rover Defender.  The pupils enjoyed seeing the results of a real-life restoration project.  The “Landy”, once heading for landfill is now used by Apex as part of its environmental volunteering activities.

Julie Colquitt, School Business Manager of St Luke’s commented:

“It was really great to receive Apex’s support for this initiative; the anticipation when the winning class was announced at a school assembly was a sight to behold!  All the children enjoyed sitting in the Landy and seeing a tangible example of the importance of recycling.

Thanks to Apex’s generosity Class 2 have really enjoyed using their fun maths and English resources which will have a long-lasting impact on their learning.”
